Abraham Lincoln has been accorded a level of esteem in our culture that is perhaps unsurpassed. Perhaps due to that fact, he has also been, as he was in life, the frequent and constant target of critique. Such re-evaluation is lawful, but it is contended here that while some of the basis for his stature may be misfounded, likewise much of the criticism of Lincoln has been premised upon flawed conceptions. Even where some have come close in their analysis, there remain some fundamental questions which severely compromise the validity of the interpretations. It is suggested here that Lincoln can better be understood in the context of his political economy and that this methodology will establish for him a much more secure and even more paramount position in our national pantheon. Thus, it can be made of his canonization and demythification, a new, more coherent, even more valuable, apotheosis. That political economy is grounded in the Whig or American System world view, springs as much from his own experience so typical of the American tradition as from his political associations, and informs, though lawfully in progression, his politics before and after his election to the Presidency, and especially his views on slavery and union.
